A (novel?) (novella?) multimedia thing
by Ifeanyi Awachie
This is Adaobi Akudu.
Her favorite band is Vampire Weekend. This is important to know.
Just before the start of junior year, Ada’s father announces that the family is moving to Connecticut.
Ada is not pleased about this.
Ada’s dad has been out of work for a while. His brother, who lives in New Haven, has just told him about an opening at the pharmaceutical company he works for.
The family moves in with Ada’s empty-nester uncle and aunt, and Ada and her younger siblings start attending Hopkins, a local prep school.
Ada hates Hopkins.
But she likes the jazz band. The boys share her taste in music. She hits it off immediately with Elly, a Filipino bass player.
And she particularly likes Nathan, the lead guitarist.
Kele, a senior at Hopkins, is also Nigerian and lives in Ada’s uncle’s neighborhood.
He’s a straight-A student, the oldest child in his family, and is applying to Yale.
Ada’s parents love him.
Ada can’t stand him.
She thinks he’s too serious and stuck-up.
Ada’s parents ask Kele to give Ada weekly driving lessons. They also hint that Ada and Kele should spend more time together.
Ada’s dad gets the job at his brother’s company.
Ada is the last to know. Ezinma, her younger sister, hears first and tells Ada and their siblings.
Ada vents her frustration about this at dinner one night.
Ada’s sister, Ezinma, joins the junior varsity soccer team at Hopkins.
Her first game is on the same night as a party at Nathan’s house. Ada’s parents pressure her to go to the game.
Ezzie plays exceptionally well, but she doesn’t get much time on the field, and Hopkins loses.
Ada was upset about missing Nathan’s party, but feels bad for her sister.
Ada sneaks out during a Nigerian party at her uncle’s house to go to the Vampire Weekend concert.
The concert is in New York. It’s Ada’s first time in the city.
A week after the concert, Ada’s feelings about Kele have started to change.
